Old Point National Bank breaks ground for new branch in Ghent
This event marked the beginning of Old Point National Bank's 21st branch. CEO Robert Shuford, Sr. told guests that the bank originally opened for business in 1923 in Hampton, and for the first few months, operated out of a window in Cooper's Confectionary Store. In May 1923, the bank moved into its first building, which was a 2,000-square-foot structure that cost $15,300 to construct. He noted that there was a construction cost overrun of $853 and that the board of directors was quite perturbed about this. The new branch in Norfolk will be 8,000 square feet and the bank is investing $3.8 million in its construction.
